Past Imperfect was filmed on discontinued 16mm Fuji film stock in the period between the change over from one contemporary artwork to the installation of the next. Originally the plinth was intended to hold an equestrian statue of William IV, yet this was never realized due to lack of funds. Seeing the plinth ‘empty’ has become a rare sight but leaves room for a revisiting of the checkered history of Trafalgar Square, from symbol of national identity and war to protests and public entertainment events. draws attention to two pyramids, one real the other imaginary. The latter image is a drawing made by Col. Trench who suggested that a pyramid should be built on Trafalgar Square in memory of the Napoleonic wars.
