The Eagle Document Installation is the culmination of the filmed rehearsals for the live performance The Eagle Document – Performance which took place at the James Hockey and Foyer Galleries on September 14th 2007. Combining Contact dance, performance art and falconry display, the live performance was choreographed to sound tracks by the experimental band Bender. Both the performance and the subsequent Installation were conceived for the unique space of the James Hockey and Foyer Galleries and exhibited there together in 2008.
The work is inspired by Marcel Broodthaers’ Musée d’Aigles, a fictive museum/installation which critiqued the legitimisation and value system bestowed upon the institutionalised art object. The Eagle Document – |
Installation borrows Broodthaers’ methodological trope ‘the object as a method of display’ and investigates the notion of the ‘art object’ via newer and expanded art forms, such as the live display, the live performance, the performance document and lastly the art installation as an immersive multi-channel experience. The body of work originated with the live event which examined notions of liveness, performativity and the document in the diagrammatic space of the gallery. Echoing in part the symbolic ritual of a traditional falconry display, the work utilises the birds of prey as the performative device for an enactment of an imaginary human-animal relationship which was also inspired by the formations of early Baroque dance.
