The installation presented a body of new work developed during the artists’ ongoing collaborative investigation into the post-industrial landscape of North Wales. The geo location of the Dinorwic Quarry near Llanberries, the second largest slate mine in Wales is an exemplary site for the exploration of the ‘Missing Mountain’.
The installation presents a body of new work developed during an ongoing collaborative investigation into the post-industrial landscape of North Wales. The geo location of the Dinorwic Quarry near Llanberis, the second largest slate mine in Wales, is an exemplary site for the exploration of a hypothesis of ‘The Missing Mountain’. Marked by massive excavation pits the mountain with its exposed sheer rock faces has become a favourite with rock climbers. In contrast to this hollowing out the mountain also has been dramatically reshaped by man made hills of displaced material, namely the slate waste, left behind after production. |
Considering the current debates on the Anthropocene, the ‘Missing Mountain’ project proposes that when the connection to the source is lost ego defines our environment and validation. There is a vast volume of data that can be consumed while sifting through the Anthropogenic Deposits of an aestheticized landscape. Hence we must attempt to recognize the markers within this data, so as to define our level of abstraction from the physical nature of the world; without these markers we cannot replace the knowledge that has been lost. The Missing Mountain is the process both artists’ employ to piece together history and purpose; rebuilding layer by layer until we arrive back at the source and free ourselves from the environmental construct of our own making.
